TMD treatments

TMD / Disorders of the jaw

Disorders of the jaw is also known as temporomandibular disorders which can often be referred to as TMD.

TMD can cause jaw pain as well as limit opening of the jaw. The joint is known as the temporomandibular joint (TMJ) which allows the muscles of the jaw to open and close and move to the side.

Some common factors that can cause TMD is clenching and grinding of the teeth. People suffering from TMD can have different levels of symptoms. Some people can experience sharp pain that is intermittent compared to a dull and constant pain.
Limited jaw movement, difficulty opening the mouth and locked jaw can all be TMD symptoms.

Leaving TMD untreated may lead to more pain and can worsen the condition.
Treatment options may include getting a nightguard made. If clenching or grinding your teeth at night is causing TMD then a splint may be made to help reduce the pain.

TMJ exercises: If experiencing discomfort, a dentist may show you some exercises to help with the symptoms.
