Sleep apnoea

Oral appliance therapy uses a dental device fitted to the patients mouth to prevent their airways from collapsing during their sleep. This is usually achieved by holding the jaw forward.

People with obstructive sleep apnoea most commonly snore loudly and they may also experience symptoms such as:

  • Tiredness on waking
  • Excessive day time sleepiness
  • Choking or gasping during sleep
  • Morning headaches
  • Poor concentration
  • Personality changes that include irritability

During waking hours, the airways are held open by the tone of the muscle around them, but during sleep these muscles relax.

For some people, the soft tissue muscles relax too much, which can cause an obstruction of the airway. The obstruction of the airway may be partial or complete.

If airflow is interrupted by at least 50% for more than 10 seconds then it can be classified as apnoea.
