Advances in technology mean that we are able to perform many of our treatments without the use of local anaesthetic. However, there are still many instances that you may require local anaesthetic for your procedure. This will numb a region within your mouth for a number of hours. If you do require anaesthetic, you will likely still be experiencing some numbness when you leave the clinic. It is important to be careful when you eat hot or cold foods, as these can easily burn a numb mouth. It is also important that you do not chew or play with your numb tissues, such as your tongue or cheek, as this can lead to painful, traumatic lesions when your anaesthetic wears off. If you experience extended numbness following your procedure, please let us know as soon as possible.
Immediately following your procedure, you will be asked to bite on a sterile gauze pad. This is to slow the bleeding. You can expect minor bleeding for a few hours following your procedure.
For the first 24 hours following your procedure, it is vital that we minimise trauma to the healing
socket. We do this by the following:
Over the counter pain medications may be used to assist with pain relief. You may also place a cold compress on the outside of your cheek to minimise pain and swelling.
If bleeding persists, please contact us as soon as possible, or attend your local emergency clinic for assistance.
Please rinse your mouth with warm, salty water 2-3 times daily. We ask that you do this for approximately one (1) week or until the wound is healed. The following is a guideline for this rinse:
– Approximately half (1/2) a teaspoon of salt in approximately one (1) cup of warm water,
Ensure that you remain hydrated in the days following your procedure. If you have any questions, please contact us as soon as possible so that we can assist you as best we can.
